Summer Internship in Nanjing University

This summer, young researchers from the Laboratatory of Laser Spectroscopy ISAN participated in a summer internship in the southern capital of China – Nanjing.

Scientific groups from ISAN and Nanjing University collaborate through the International Laboratory of Nanoplasmonics and its Applications in Biology and Medicine, established at ISAN under the supervision of Dr. Pavel Melentiev and Professor Bin Kang.

Young researchers share their impressions:

During nearly two weeks, we visited many laboratories in Nanjing University’s chemistry building, where researchers study nanostructures, biomolecules, and cells using electrochemistry, optical microscopy, and spectroscopy. It was fascinating to see how they apply optical detection methods in their research. Professors from these labs gave us lectures that were very informative and engaging. We especially appreciated the time for detailed discussions and exchange of ideas.

We also gave presentations on single-molecule detection and the development of zero-mode waveguides, which sparked interest among our Chinese colleagues. We had the chance to experiment with spaser particles and work with a streak camera.

Beyond the academic part, we explored China. Almost every day we visited a new place — natural parks, mountains, and cities — and saw many historical and cultural sites. University students gave us guided tours. The scenery is stunning! Overall, my impressions of China are extremely positive; it was a very enriching experience.
